Between Sound & Noise

Between Sound & Noise

2019

In collaboration with the music label ECM to celebrate the label’s 50 year legacy. Held in Seoul, Korea in 2019 the show featured music from Meredith Monk, Steve Riech, Pat Metheny, Arvo Pärt amongst others. Four visual artists were asked to respond to ECM’s rich history.

Working in response to John Cage and his album As It Is’, Winston created a suite of 186 drawings.

With the drawings he was exploring 6 categories of listening — for each of these categories he developed a different style of drawing notation. These can be seen as horizontal sections that run through the 15 meter work.

The backing sheet for the few hundred drawings makes a work in of itself. Inspired by Cages 433″ — the central white square is the original sheet colour before the drawings were done. Inspired by Cage’s seminal piece 433″ [a musical composition that instructed the musicians not to play their instruments during the entire duration of the performance].

Created for ECM Records 50th anniversary exhibition RE:ECM Hyundai Card Storage Gallery, Seoul.
